McGregor Boil Advisory

Construction Water Shut-off – Boil Advisory Notice


Effective Wednesday, September 18th, 2024 at approximately 1:30 pm, Portzen Construction and McGregor Municipal Utilities Water Department will be shutting a large section of the water system off to tie-in a new section of water main. This water shut off will impact a large section of the distribution system and a boil advisory will follow when the water is restored. We encourage you to watch for community notifications and Facebook updates and listen to WQPC and FM100 for radio notices.


The following Streets and sections will be affected, from the Catholic Church on 7th Street up to and including the Great River Care Center & Assisted Living. Other areas affected include the 700 block of Ann Street, Buell Ave, Garnavillo Ave, West Main Street, West Spring Street, and Tanglewood Dr. With this wide-spread water shut down we are anticipating when water is restored a lot of air in the mains and water discoloration until we get all the air out of the lines.



Due to the potential for bacterial contamination, when water is restored, is being recommended that these residents and businesses boil the water before using for drinking or cooking or an alternative source be used. IT IS RECOMMENDED NOT TO DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. The water may be used for bathing and other similar purposes. We are also recommending holding off on doing any white loads of wash until your water is clear. It is recommended to run the first water from the faucet that does not have an aerator screen, such as a bathtub or hose spicket. Open the faucet slowly to allow the air to escape. Once the water is flowing, allow the faucet to run until it is clear. The water may be cloudy or discolored at first due to air in the water or particles that dislodge as the pipes fill with water. If water is cloudy throughout the house and does not clear after allowing the water to run for several minutes, contact MMU.

This advisory is a precaution until bacterial sample results are available. You will be notified when the results are available and the advisory order has been lifted.
