ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, released its 2024 navigation statistics for the Upper Mississippi River from Minneapolis to Guttenberg, Iowa, today, Jan. 22.
The 2024 navigation season unofficially ended Dec. 1, 2024, after the Motor Vessel Ashley Danielson departed St. Paul, Minnesota. The 2024 navigation season started March 17, 2024, when the Motor Vessel Joseph Patrick Eckstein broke her way through the ice of Lake Pepin enroute to St. Paul.
Navigation statistics fluctuate from year to year, depending on the weather, river flows and the length of the navigation season. The St. Paul District maintains a 9-foot navigation channel from Minneapolis to Guttenberg, Iowa. Keeping this system open is vital to the nation’s economy.
Lock and Dam 8 | Genoa, Wisconsin
During the 2024 season, Corps staff supported 1,369 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 8, near Genoa, Wisconsin, which was below the 10-year average of 1,796 lockages. The 2024 lockages supported around 9.6 million tons, or approximately 4,800 barges, of commodities shipped by the navigation industry. During the 2023 season, Corps staff supported 1,523 commercial lockages and the movement of more than 8.6 million tons of commodities.
In addition to the commercial lockages, Corps staff locked 1,700 recreation vessels during 904 lockages. To help minimize wait times for lockages, the Corps tries to include multiple recreation vessels during a single lockage. There were an additional 24 lockages from various government agencies including the Corps.
Lock and Dam 9 | Lynxville, Wisconsin
During the 2024 season, Corps staff supported 1,449 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 9, near Lynxville, Wisconsin, which was below the 10-year average of 1,866 lockages. The 2024 lockages supported around 9.6 million tons, or approximately 4,800 barges, of commodities shipped by the navigation industry. During the 2023 season, Corps staff supported 1,489 commercial lockages and the movement of more than 8.7 million tons of commodities.
In addition to the commercial lockages, Corps staff locked 1,891 recreation vessels during 957 lockages. To help minimize wait times for lockages, the Corps tries to include multiple recreation vessels during a single lockage. There were an additional 29 lockages from various government agencies including the Corps.
Lock and Dam 10 | Guttenberg, Iowa
During the 2024 season, Corps staff supported 1,601 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 10, near Guttenberg, Iowa, which was below the 10-year average of 2,213 lockages. The 2024 lockages supported around 10.9 million tons, or approximately 5,450 barges, of commodities shipped by the navigation industry. During the 2023 season, Corps staff supported 1,748 commercial lockages and the movement of more than 10 million tons of commodities.
In addition to the commercial lockages, Corps staff locked 1,252 recreation vessels during 794 lockages. To help minimize wait times for lockages, the Corps tries to include multiple recreation vessels during a single lockage. There were an additional 20 lockages from various government agencies including the Corps.
Lock and Dam 1, Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam | Minneapolis
During the 2024 season, Corps staff supported 460 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 1 and Lower St. Anthony Falls, both located in Minneapolis. The 2024 season was below the 10-year average of 583 lockages.
In addition to the commercial lockages, Corps staff locked 925 recreation vessels during 406 lockages. To help minimize wait times for lockages, the Corps tries to include multiple recreation vessels during a single lockage. There was one additional lockage from various government agencies including the Corps.
Lock and Dam 2 | Hastings, Minnesota
During the 2024 season, Corps staff supported 1,219 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 2, near Hastings, Minnesota, which was below the 10-year average of 1,431 lockages. The 2024 lockages supported around 5.7 million tons, or approximately 2,870 barges, of commodities shipped by the navigation industry. During the 2023 season, Corps staff supported 1,218 commercial lockages and the movement of more than 5.8 million tons of commodities.
In addition to the commercial lockages, Corps staff locked 1,334 recreation vessels during 880 lockages. To help minimize wait times for lockages, the Corps tries to include multiple recreation vessels during a single lockage. There were an additional 16 lockages from various government agencies including the Corps.
Lock and Dam 3 | Red Wing, Minnesota
During the 2024 season, Corps staff supported 1,201 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 3, near Welch, Minnesota, which was below the 10-year average of 1,515 lockages. The 2024 lockages supported around 5.8 million tons, or approximately 2,890 barges, of commodities shipped by the navigation industry. During the 2023 season, Corps staff supported 1,270 commercial lockages and the movement of more than 5.8 million tons of commodities.
In addition to the commercial lockages, Corps staff locked 6,219 recreation vessels during 2,513 lockages. To help minimize wait times for lockages, the Corps tries to include multiple recreation vessels during a single lockage. There were an additional 17 lockages from various government agencies including the Corps.
Lock and Dam 4 | Alma, Wisconsin
During the 2024 season, Corps staff supported 1,294 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 4, near Alma, Wisconsin, which was below the 10-year average of 1,617 lockages. The 2024 lockages supported around 6.5 million tons, or approximately 3,260 barges, of commodities shipped by the navigation industry. During the 2023 season, Corps staff supported 1,576 commercial lockages and the movement of more than 6.4 million tons of commodities.
In addition to the commercial lockages, Corps staff locked 2,580 recreation vessels during 1,491 lockages. To help minimize wait times for lockages, the Corps tries to include multiple recreation vessels during a single lockage. There were an additional 25 lockages from various government agencies including the Corps.
Lock and Dam 5 | Minnesota City, Minnesota
During the 2024 season, Corps staff supported 1,349 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 5, near Minnesota City, Minnesota, which was below the 10-year average of 1,611 lockages. The 2024 lockages supported over 6.5 million tons, or approximately 3,260 barges, of commodities shipped by the navigation industry. During the 2023 season, Corps staff supported 1,450 commercial lockages and the movement of less than 6.4 million tons of commodities.
In addition to the commercial lockages, Corps staff locked 1,910 recreation vessels during 954 lockages. To help minimize wait times for lockages, the Corps tries to include multiple recreation vessels during a single lockage. There were an additional 36 lockages from various government agencies including the Corps.

During the 2024 season, Corps staff supported 1,335 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 5A, near Fountain City, Wisconsin, which was below the 10-year average of 1,637 lockages. The 2024 lockages supported over 6.5 million tons, or approximately 3,280 barges, of commodities shipped by the navigation industry. During the 2023 season, Corps staff supported 1,395 commercial lockages and the movement of more than 6.3 million tons of commodities.

To help minimize wait times for lockages, the Corps tries to include multiple recreation vessels during a single lockage. There were an additional 57 lockages from various government agencies including the Corps.
Lock and Dam 6 | Fountain City, Wisconsin
During the 2024 season, Corps staff supported 1,526 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 6, near Trempealeau, Wisconsin, which was below the 10-year average of 1,883 lockages. The 2024 lockages supported around 8.6 million tons, or approximately 4,330 barges, of commodities shipped by the navigation industry. During the 2023 season, Corps staff supported 1,534 commercial lockages and the movement of more than 7.9 million tons of commodities.
In addition to the commercial lockages, Corps staff locked 1,511 recreation vessels during 924 lockages. To help minimize wait times for lockages, the Corps tries to include multiple recreation vessels during a single lockage. There were an additional 41 lockages from various government agencies including the Corps.
Lock and Dam 7 | La Crescent, Minnesota
During the 2024 season, Corps staff supported 1,549 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 7, near La Crescent, Minnesota, which was below the 10-year average of 2,188 lockages. The 2024 lockages supported around 8.7 million tons, or approximately 4,360 barges, of commodities shipped by the navigation industry. During the 2023 season, Corps staff supported 1,727 commercial lockages and the movement of over 7.9 million tons of commodities.
In addition to the commercial lockages, Corps staff locked 2,462 recreation vessels during 1,055 lockages. To help minimize wait times for lockages, the Corps tries to include multiple recreation vessels during a single lockage. There were an additional 41 lockages from various government agencies including the Corps.
