Meet Six GOP Candidates for Supervisor May 19 in Elkader

In the June 5th primary election, two of the six candidates running as Republicans will be selected to run in the November General Election for 2 vacancies on the Clayton County Board of Supervisors.

All six candidates plan to attend a Meet and Greet to be held Saturday, May 19 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Central State Bank Community Room in Elkader. They will be available to answer questions and each candidate will briefly talk about themselves and what they hope to accomplish. Refreshments will be served.

Charles Carroll grew up on a farm outside of McGregor. He worked 26 years for IBM as a software engineer. Currently, he serves on the McGregor City Council and farms. Charles is a fiscal conservative who believes government should be run the same way – efficiently but effectively and that his combination of business, farm and local government experience can help him serve admirably as your county supervisor Charles is looking forward to meeting people at the event on Saturday.

Steve Doeppke would like to continue serving the community in which he has lived all his life. Married and father of three sons, Steve has an impressive record of service. He worked 42 years for the Iowa Dept. of Transportation, and 10 years as a construction inspector in summer. He served as a reserve police officer and a volunteer fireman for 25 years. Steve would like the opportunity to improve spending, to better the county with his knowledge of new construction and general maintenance, and to work to improve the communications between residents and county employees.

Sharon Keehner considers herself a hard-nosed fiscal conservative who understands that “it’s your money”. She is a good listener and knows it is important to make sure that concerns and priorities are considered. In her opinion the most difficult decisions she will make as a Supervisor will be maintaining constituents concerns while setting spending priorities so that money is spent in the right places. Sharon is a life-long area resident, a farm wife, mother and Educator as a Business Teacher in both High School and College level. Sharon brings leadership with common sense.

Douglas Puffett is a graduate of Iowa State University with degrees in Agricultural Studies and Agronomy. He has served on the Starmont Community School District Board of Education since 2013 and currently serves as President. He wants to make certain Clayton County government is making the best use of taxpayer monies and help maintain the County on strong financial footing while providing core county services as well as maintaining county facilities and infrastructure. He believes the top priority is economic development. Doug, a married father of two, is a self-employed farmer with both a grain and livestock operation.

Jim Smith is a business owner with a Bachelors in Civil engineering and a Masters in Architecture. He has a rich background of experience ranging from being a partner and structural department head for an architectural and structural engineering firm providing services for buildings and bridges to being senior engineer for Martin Marietta Denver Aerospace (now Lockheed Martin) involved in satellite launch complexes. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Jim is married, the father of 5 married children and grandfather to many. He is a member of the County Zoning Board of Adjustment. His accomplishments and memberships are too numerous to mention here. Come to the Meet and Greet and learn more about him.

Eldon Troester is married to Lorna and father of two. A full time farmer involved with all aspects of agriculture, he presently serves as Mendon Township Trustee, is an honorary member of Conservation Districts of Iowa and served on the Clayton County Planning and Zoning Commission. Eldon served in an engineering unit with the Wisconsin National Guard as well as conducting many diversified auctions in Iowa and Wisconsin as an aucti9oneer and has been a representative for a major seed corn company for 30 years. Eldon brings a sense of practical experience and the ability to react to unforeseen situations.
