On 4-7-18, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office gave a small presentation on how to avoid scams and Identity theft at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado. There were approximately 50 people present for the presentation. Fayette County Deputy Chris Schveiger covered ways to avoid suspicious scam phone calls, emails, and messages, and what to do if one would receive something suspicious. Fayette County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public that there are scams out there that identify themselves as family members, government officials, the IRS and various charities. Do your research: search whomever is calling you or messaging you. Ask questions, shop safely and finally report this to local law enforcement if you feel you might be a victim of identity theft or a scam, or tell a trusted family member. Never give out any credit card information, social security numbers, names, date of births or addresses. This will protect you and limit you from being a victim of identity theft. Finally, if something sounds too good to be true, it's probably not legitimate. Protect yourself and don't become a victim.
