Arson Charge

 After a month long investigation, the Fayette County Sheriff's office filed charges of Arson in the first degree on 19 year old Hayes Edward William Kern of Winthorp. On 1/21/2018 the Fayette County Sheriff's Office took a report of smoke coming from a residence located at 14363 35th street just East of Oelwein. During the investigation it was found that the residence was in the process of being remodeled at the time of the fire. A short time before the fire was discovered  a co-owner observed a vehicle leaving the area of where the fire was reported. Upon completion of the investigation charges of Burglary in the third degree, a class "D" felony and Arson in the first degree a class "B" felony were filed on 2/21/2018.  The Fayette County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Oelwein Fire Department.  A warrant has been issued for Kern in the amount of $50,000.00 cash. Kern is currently in custody at the Buchanan County Jail on charges of Theft 2nd degree and Unauthorized use of a credit card (under $1000). When Buchanan County has completed their court proceedings, Kern will be transported to the Fayette county jail.
