On January 26, 2018, at 11:02am, a Grant County Sheriff's Deputy was patrolling Hwy 133 in Woodman, when he observed Jacob Sparrgrove driving a 2002 Ford truck on Hwy 133. A traffic stop was conducted on Mr. Sparrgrove, due to vehicle's registration being expired. Along with the expired registration, Mr. Sparrgrove's driver's license is suspended for several unpaid fines. As a result of the traffic stop, the deputy discovered Mr. Sparrgrove was in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The charges for Mr. Sparrgrove are as follows: Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, expired vehicle registration, and no vehicle insurance.

On January 29, 2018, at 2:42 p.m. the Grant County Sheriff's Office was notified of a two vehicle crash on STH 80 just south of Lone Road in Smelser Township. The investigation shows a 2009 Kia Sedona was traveling north on STH 80 and was being operated by Jerrod Gates, 42, of Hazel Green. A 2000 Freightliner was also traveling north on STH 80 and was stopped and turning into a private driveway. The semi was being operated by Marvin Dittmer, 55, of Newton, Iowa. Gates did not see the semi stopped and turning, which resulted in the Gates vehicle crashing into the rear of the semi. Gates and his passenger, Jake Sannito, 20, Hazel Green, were both transported to the Southwest Health Center for injuries suffered in the crash. Dittmer was uninjured as a result of the crash. Assisting the Grant County Sheriff's Office at the accident scene was the Cuba City Police and Fire Departments, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Southwest Health EMS. The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
