On September 8, 2019 at approximately 7:00pm the Prairie du Chien Police Department executed a search warrant at two locations. One location was in the Township of Prairie du Chien (56 Joyce Avenue) and the other location was in the City of Prairie du Chien (404 Cliff Haven Road). Over the course of the last few weeks the police department received several reports of storage lockers being entered and items stolen from them at Z Brother’s Storage located at 404 Cliff Haven Road in Prairie du Chien.

Through the course of the investigation a suspect was identified and officers utilized social media “Buy, Sell & Trade” pages to confirm countless items of stolen property were located in the suspect’s storage locker and home.

Justin W. Schmittler, 43 of Prairie du Chien, was arrested and charges will be sought for nine (9) counts of Burglary, Possession of Burglarious Tools, and Obstruction with the Crawford County District Attorney’s Office. This is another case that proves how crucial it is for victims of thefts to report their items missing. Hundreds of items of suspected stolen property were documented during the searches; however, because the items were not reported as stolen to the proper authorities, some of the items were left at the locations of the search warrants.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the search warrant conducted in the Township of Prairie du Chien along with Milo’s Towing in the removal of a vehicle.
