On May 4, 2019, at approximately 5:27 AM the Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of suspicious activity in West Union. A Deputy Sheriff located the male and vehicle described as suspicious. A traffic stop was subsequently conducted and found a Michael Dejesus Hawthorne, age 29 of Waterloo, to be driving a Green 2001 Chevrolet Impala just west of West Union on Highway 18. After further investigation it was found that Hawthorne did not have a valid driver’s license. Hawthorne was arrested for Driving while license Suspended (Simple Misdemeanor), Failure to have financial liability, Possession of a Controlled Substance - Marijuana 2nd offense (Serious misdemeanor) , and Possession of drug paraphernalia (Simple Misdemeanor). Hawthorne was transported to the Fayette County Jail and awaits an initial appearance from a judge.


On May 5, 2019, at approximately 12:32 AM a Deputy Sheriff initiated a traffic stop on a White 1998 Mercury Mountaineer for a traffic infraction near the intersection of C33 and Y Avenue; approximately four miles west of Westgate. Upon further investigation, the driver was determined to be Jeffrey Alan Happel, age 50 of Frederika. Happel was found to be intoxicated. Happel was arrested for Operating while intoxicated 2nd Offense (Aggravated Misdemeanor), and Aiding and Abetting to a violation of an Order of Protection (Simple Misdemeanor). Melissa Jean Garbes, age 39 of Van Horne was also arrested for Violation of a Domestic Abuse No Contact Order (Simple Misdemeanor). Both Happel and Garbes were transported to the Fayette County Jail and await an initial appearance from a judge.
