Burning Meeting

Mar 4th, 2019

Prescribed burning is one of the more popular and recommended options to manage your CRP or native prairie. It is beneficial for native grasses and wildflowers and increases your wildlife habitat value. It may even be a requirement for managing your CRP. For those of you that are planning to conduct your own burn, we are putting on a workshop to help you prepare for and implement that burn.

It is important to conduct prescribed burns in a safe manner to continue a culture accepting of this type of management. Burning is an important tool for grassland management; and a tool that we need to make sure is available to those that wish to use it. Come network with others who want to burn. Neighbors helping neighbors is a great way to share knowledge, equipment, and labor. This workshop will give those new to burning a place to start and those that are experienced a good refresher and new ideas.

On Wednesday, March 20th, Pheasants Forever (PF), Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) will hold an informational meeting, inside, for landowners and land managers from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm (registration from 9:00 – 9:30 am) at the Upper Iowa University campus (501 Washington St., Fayette, IA). It will take place in the Andres Center room 202 on the second floor, with an elevator available for assistance. Afterwards, weather permitting, we may have an opportunity to watch a live demonstration burn in a nearby field to see how to implement a successful burn. This event is open to landowners, producers, and land managers and is free of charge. Please RSVP by March 12th to Allie Rath at 319-330-6015 or arath@pheasantsforever.org. Seats are limited.

Topics include:

· Removing/controlling red cedars and other woody/invasive species

· Increasing/maintaining quality upland wildlife habitat

· Fire behavior, safety, and weather

· Prescribed burn equipment, burn planning, preparation, and implementation

In the morning, there will be complimentary coffee and refreshments provided by the Fayette County Pheasants Forever chapter. Lunch will be on your own and Upper Iowa has a nice lunch buffet open to the public within walking distance for $8.25 (plus tax)/person.
