Deer Hunting

By: News Release
Jan 5th, 2019

Deer hunting opportunities run through January 27

Iowa hunters looking to continue their time in the field can purchase
a license specific to the Harpers Ferry or Elkader deer management
zone. Those deer management zones are included in the special January
antlerless season that runs Jan. 11-27.

This opportunity is for antlerless deer only and hunters who purchase
one of these licenses are required to hunt within the zone boundary
and provide a tissue sample if a deer is taken. The bulk of the land
within the zones is privately owned. Hunters must secure permission
from the landowner before entering private property. More information,
including zone maps, is available at www.iowadnr.gov/cwd.

Licenses may be purchased for the Harpers Ferry zone at Barry’s
MiniMart in Harpers Ferry, Sportsmen Unlimited, in Waukon, or at the
Wallace State Office Building, in Des Moines. Licenses for the Elkader
zone may be purchased at the Elkader Coast-to-Coast in Elkader or at
the Wallace State Office Building in Des Moines.

Check stations will be open Jan. 12-13 from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for
each of the zones.

Deer taken from the Harpers Ferry zone can be taken to the DNR office,
427 North First Street in Harpers Ferry. Outside of that time,
successful hunters can call 563-349-7550 to arrange for sample
collection.

Deer taken from the Elkader zone can be taken to the Osborne Park,
29862 Osborne Road, in Elkader. Outside of that time, successful
hunters can call 563-349-7511 to arrange for sample collection.

In addition to the deer management zone licenses, Allamakee County has
an estimated 500 antlerless deer licenses available for the
county-wide January 11-27 antlerless deer season. Hunters may purchase
these county specific licenses at any license sales agent until the
quota fills or the season ends.
