On December 28th, 2018 at approximately 4:26 PM the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office along with Bernard Fire and Ambulance Services and Cascade Ambulance Services responded to a reported two vehicle collision on Sundown Road approximately 1.5 miles north of Hwy. 151.

The investigation into the collision showed that a 2000 Nissan Frontier Pick-up driven by Oliver Clanin (17) of Cedar Rapids was traveling south bound on Sundown Road when he lost control of the vehicle due to the roadway becoming ice covered. The vehicle slid sideways across the center dividing line and into the north bound lane of Sundown Road. A north bound 2018 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Michael McArthur (46) of Asbury was unable to avoid the collision with the Clanin vehicle and struck the Clanin vehicle on the passenger's side.

The resulting collision claimed the life of the passenger in the Clanin vehicle who was identified as Jaycee M. Payne (17) of Marion.  Oliver Clanin was transported to Finley Hospital in Dubuque and was later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City for treatment of serious injuries. Michael McArthur was transported to Finley Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Sundown Road was closed for approximately 2 1/2 hours due to the collision. The Iowa State Patrol and Peosta Police Department assisted the Sheriff's Office.

The investigation is on going at this time.
