Assault Arrest

On 12-16-18, at Approximately 8:00PM, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a suspicious vehicle and a domestic assault in the Arlington area.  Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on scene and upon further investigation  It was found that Joshua Freedom Smith, 39 of Oelwein, was driving in the Arlington area under a barred license.  A further investigation showed that Smith was wanted out of Buchanan for a Parole Violation Warrant.  Later in the evening Smith was seen and fled from authorities after assaulting a Deputy who was attempting to make an arrest in the Maynard area.   On 12-17-18, Smith was taken into custody at a residence in Oelwein by Sheriff’s Deputies following further investigation.  Smith was arrested and charged with Driving While License Barred, an Aggravated Misdemeanor, Domestic Assault 3rd Offense, a D Felony,  Assault on a Peace Officer, a Serious Misdemeanor, and Interference with Official Act, a Simple Misdemeanor.  Smith was transported to Fayette County Jail where he is currently being held without bond.  If convicted Smith could face up to 8 years in prison.
