Valentine's Contest

I fell in love with my wife right away and knew she was the one. I chose the Fenelon Elevator in Dubuque  around Christmas time for my surprise since she loves Christmas. Something about the lights, music, and close family feelings that she enjoys. I requested we go Christmas shopping that night and used the trip there to discuss my heavy feelings for her. When we got to the elevator it was closed but still had a great view from the side. She said yes and now we have a beautiful baby and a wonderful life to share.   Tom

My boyfriend, Derek, and I met 5 years ago at a cattle show. My family and his family both have Normande cattle and our families attended the National show. I decided to take my brother's dog for a walk through the barns to look at the other cattle. While walking the dog, Derek stopped to pet her and talk to me for a little bit. After the show we both stayed behind to help tear down and started talking some more. Derek walked away from that show saying "dang I should have gotten her number". Little did he know, I was equally as impressed and soon sent him a message on Facebook. It was our love for cows and dogs that brought us together.  Sarah

A mutual friend introduced me to Mark at a Memorial day party at the Heidelberg.  He was convinced by friends to get in a wet shorts contest late in the evening and I caught his shirt.  We began dating and a year later we returned home from a friends wedding and he asked me if I would want to do the same thing next year and of course I said yes.  We were married a year later and celebrated 25 years of married bliss in June of 2014.  We have 2 wonderful children and look forward to many more happy years together. Lori

Some call it luck, we call it fate. With only days left of our subscriptions he 'winked' at me. When we decided to meet face to face, it was love at first sight.   Stephanie

We went on a sleigh ride in December when it was lightly snowing and luckily not too cold. After a short ride we came to a gazebo that was decorated with hundreds of Christmas lights. We went into the gazebo where I had a bottle of her favorite Muscadine wine waiting for us. I had this wine shipped from Tennessee because you can’t find it in this area. We were enjoying the beauty of the fresh falling snow and the twinkling lights as we sipped our wine. Finally, I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me!   Craig

Well it took for my husband to break both my arms to propose!! :) Got my cast off and that day he asked me to be his! We had a puppy and he had the ring attached to her collar and then popped the question and now we have been married for the past 8 and 1/2 years with 2 sweet little gals and a boy due on the 16th of this month! As many we have had our ups and downs but always find a way to get through it with seeing the positive in the situation! Love works in mysterious ways! Happy valentines day......Jamie

In 1963 I was a shy young farmer.  I was also a school bus driver for Valley Schools.  As I drove through Elgin twice a day, I saw this young lady(Judy) walking along the street.  She had just opened her beauty shop.  I wrote her a letter and asked for a date.  She didn't know me, so she asked a friend about me.  He said "don't get mixed up with that guy."  Later he said he was joking and said "Go for it."  She accepted and the rest is history.  We celebrated our 50th Anniversary on September 6th, 2014.  Harold

I sealed the deal with a kiss and that was what did it. I took my now wife to a event, not really a date but when I took her back home I was able to slide across the truck seat and get a quick kiss in before she went in the house.  She to this day remembers the first kiss and we have now been married 26 happy years.  She is my sweetheart as we were married Feb. 11th, and celibrate on valentines weekends.   Mike

My husband Matt and I met in middle school though we did not start dating until after we graduated high school. We dated for about 2 years when one day he thought it would be nice to do professional pictures together. He booked a session and the day before the pictures I told him I didn't want to do them as I thought it was silly to do "girlfriend/boyfriend" pictures. He got upset with me telling me that he wanted to do this and really put the guilt trip on me so I agreed to do them. The next day he dragged me to the photographer, after about 4 pictures the photographer put me in the chair and then told Matt he was ready whenever, when I looked over Matt was on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said "yes" and we've been married for 8 years!      Nicole

Newly engaged! After 4 great years together my boyfriend insisted we take advantage of warm January weather (almost 35 degrees) and hit the slopes for a night of skiing.  It was peaceful, a dark night with bright sparkling lights illuminating the snow covered hills. Enjoying the fresh air, we rode the ski lift to the top of the mountain. I turned to him as we passed under a light and found him patiently waiting for my gaze to meet his.  He held a beautiful ring and proposed.  A complete surprise, only my father had known as my now fiancé had asked for his blessing.  We are excited to continue our lives together and I will never forget his brave proposal holding my beautiful ring… only 40 feet up in the open air.   Sarah

Dennis and i met at a night club, and from that night on it was love, and now many yrs later,we are  talking and planning our retirement yrs,,,TRUE LOVE,,,,love you Dennis forever and ever.....Janet

I planned a weekend get away to Wisconsin Dells. On our way we stopped at Devils Lake. She actually didn't want to go hiking because I had hurt my leg and I shouldn't of been hiking. But I insisted that we should, because what she didn't know was I had a ring in my pocket. I wanted it to be the perfect time and perfect lookout to where I dropped to a knee. I finally found the spot and I wanted it on video. I told her I wanted a photo at this point so we needed our picture taken. The next group to come I asked them to take our photo "video" because I was actually proposing. She had no idea!    Bobby

I had just moved to this new school my Freshman year. He was one of the cutest boys that stood out to me. I always hoped he'd talk to me because I was so shy. Finally towards the end of Sophomore year we switched numbers in a class and one night he sent me a picture message of boobies saying since he did it was my turn to send him pictures of mine. Of course I didn't but we actually talked for a long time and started dating a few weeks later. We've been together for 5 years in May. It'll be our 1st year Wedding Anniversary. We also have a 2 month old beautiful baby girl. Just to think, pictures of boobies started out our relationship. How romantic. But I couldn't be happier with anyone else.  Savannah

I came home and there was a note in the entry way. It had a little message in it and a clue to where the next note would be. I followed all the clues and they lead me to our bedroom where he had lit candles and was down on one knee. He couldn't afford a ring, but he had made one out of a twistie tie. He asked me to marry him and I of course said yes! We are currently living 1,200 miles apart and will be married this coming Summer :) -Casey

I was working in a local factory where the other gals were intent on setting me up with someone. In walked a long-haired, bearded man on an employee tour, and I remarked "I pick him!" Sure enough, we ended up on the line together at times, with some minor flirting. I left for another job a few months later. Eight years later, I ran into him in Guttenberg and we stayed in touch. The old saying "Opposites attract" must be true, as we celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary on Wednesday, February 11, 2015    Robin

If ever there were a true Valentine's she's a dental assistant named Janet. We're not kid's anymore, yet when she first called to meet for News Years Eve I was as flattered and shy as if we were kids. We ate, danced, and at midnight had our first modest kiss. Our next date was a fun and friendly road trip and Wine tasting. A Buddy Holly reenactment of his final surf ballroom performance was the night we developed signs of a potential relationship.

Since then I've had stage 4 large B cell lymphoma, gout, shingles and a large leg wound accompanied by multiple complications from the cancer treatments. Through all this Janet stayed with me and cared for me to full recovery. She has never faltered and displays only smiling optimism and commitment to us. She is the purist shining example of a true heart and a true Valentine's. I am proud she is happy to be mine.   Gordy

My hubby Jeff and I have been married for 26 yrs. We were best friends for 2 years, before we started dating in 1986, he said from the moment he seen me, I was gonna be his wife...8 months later he turned off the lighrs, put a ring on my finger and said "will ya"....he is such a of course I said yes, and after giving birth 3 times, and suffering the loss of our daughter to stillbirth, and 2 healthy boys grown up, Jeff is my rock to keep me from losing my mind. And we are happy to say we love each other to the moon and back....he us my valentine now and forever.....Janet

Nick and I dated for a year and a half before he asked me to marry him. It was New Year’s Eve ad he was on his way home ( he then lived in Iowa Falls). He told me had picked something up for me at the grocery store, I was thinking it was a bottle of wine or something! When he got to my house he asked if I wanted my gift, of course I said yes, who wouldn’t want wine!? He asked me to close my eyes, when I did I heard him get down on one knee. I knew then what was happening. I couldn’t open my eyes I was so excited, when I did he popped the question! I said yes and we continued with our plans for the night. We were headed to a local restaurant where I worked for supper. He had our parents meet us there to surprise me. It was such a great feeling walking in and everyone knowing what had just happened! It was a night I will never forget. – Heidi

I met my husband Dave 34 years ago at Lakeside. Back then there was a dance every weekend at Lakeside and that was the place to go.  So much fun.  We starting dating and a year later he picked me up after work on a Friday night and asked me to marry him and of course I said yes.  We have been married for 32 years now and are blessed with a daughter and son.   Also blessed to have a wonderful grandson.  Here is to many more happy years together!   Carol~

My husband and I are highschool sweethearts. When he decided to propose, he took me to a campsite, where we had our first date, shared our first kiss, and fell in love over and over. He lit up a campfire after I got off work from a stressful day. While the sky was lit up with stars, he got down on one knee and asked, "Savana, will you marry me?". Of course I said yes! We got married in May 2014, had our beautiful daughter in December, and we continue to fall more in love. I love you, Jacob.    -Savana

Nathan and I have been friends for 10 years where we met through 4-H. We have now been dating for 9 months after he asked me out 3 times before I said Yes!   We only get to see each other on the weekends because we live an hour and a half apart. With phone calls and text messaging our relationship is going strong. Nathan treats me special like a true gentleman where he opens doors for me. For fun we go to movies and play cards with friends. I'm glad to be dating my best friend!  Michelle

12 years ago I laid my eyes on the love of my life, Mike. We met through my cousin who was really good friends with his sister.
I ended up asking him to my junior year homecoming dance. We were high school sweethearts, and to this day our love still grows strong. We have been happily married going on 5 years, and our son just turned 2 in January. "Every love story is beautiful, but ours is my favorite!" I love you! Nicole

My husband and I met through a friend of mine.  He was quite a bit older than me, so we kept it under wraps for a few years until I turned 18.  Once we made it public, we couldn’t have been happier!  After about 5 years I was ready to get married…he wasn’t ready quite yet.  When we got to the 7 year mark I told him he either needed to propose to me or I was going to propose to him in front of my Grandma and make an honest man out of him.  That Christmas he proposed.  We’ve been happily married for 7 years and have two beautiful children together.  All in all, I know the wait was worth it!   Jessica

My husband of a year and a half are expecting our 1st child in May. It all started about six and a half years ago but our best story was about two and a half years ago when he asked me to be his wife and I accepted with my whole heart. It was an early evening and we were headed to the woods to change some deer trail cameras. We stopped by my parents' home, as I ran into the house he went to the shop with my dad. When they came back, my dad said "I don't know when he'll ask but I've given him my blessing to marry you". I was shocked. I really thought that Tyler wouldn't ask that day being my dad had just kind of spoiled it. Next thing I know Tyler is asking me to put up a camera and I wouldn't so he did it as he says, "I was trying to get your reaction but being you want to be stubborn... Kimberly, will you marry me?" I happily accepted and our love story continues.     Kimberly

My wife Amy and I have both been music lovers for many many years.  It just so happens that our love of music is what brought us together.  Her brother was a new friend of mine as he was a new employee at my work.  He introduced us and we talked and enjoyed Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits for the next couple of hours.  She called me a couple of days later and we began our relationship soon thereafter.  That was 12 years ago.  She is still my favorite concert partner til this day.  We have enjoyed, I'm sure, over a hundred concerts in that time.   Jake

My husband and I at the age of 13 years old at Maquoketa Middle school. Erik says it best when he says he was a little nerd from the catholic school and I was  a mean girl that came from Delmar. Upon meeting we became friend instantly.  In middle school and high school we had the same group of friends, and were best buds.  It all stayed this way until our senior year of high school when we started looking at each other a little differently. During our senior year we date off and on and then both went away to different colleges.  Erik and I would talk daily and would see each other every weekend.  During our junior year of college we started officially dating each other.  We still continue to be each others best friend and support system.  In our four years of marriage we have been through a lot we have both lost a parents, had a set a twins and have another baby on the way.  Through this all I can not imagine not having my best friend by my side.  Jillian

My husband and I met 16 years ago through His sister had put his profile online and would respond to anyone who checked his profile and then let him know who to contact. We had an immediate connection on our first date. After we moved to northern NM he proposed to me and we were married on Valentine's Day 2000. This is our 15th anniversary year and I can honestly say we are still as happy and more in love every day, and we are also the legal guardians of our 6 year old granddaughter and she has truly enhanced our lives.  Sue

I found out how special my husband was during college.  My sister had just gotten an opal promise ring, and was entering a college class when her ring caught on the door and broke. She lost her opal on the snow-covered steps below.  At that moment, by husband was going to class, and stopped to help her. Being the clever guy he was, he got a wastebasket, and swept all the snow on the step into it. He then melted the snow, and found her ring. He caught my eye with that kind gesture, and we’ve been together ever since.  Kristy

I literally knocked my would-be wife, Sarah, off her feet on my second day of college. Knocked her right over on her way out of the lunchroom.  She was so breathtakingly beautiful that I had to figure out what classes she took just so I could talk to her on breaks.  Three and a half years later at the Iowa State Fair I had a caricature drawn with the words "Will You Marry Me?" and a diamond ring drawn on her finger. While she looked at the caricature I got down on one knee behind her. BEST DECISION EVER!Kilyn

This nice looking man, Jeff, always came into the store where I worked and I could tell he liked me and on a Monday he came in and asked me out to a movie! He was very nervous and really sweet! That following Saturday he picked me up at my place and we went to the movies and it was definitely a day I will never forget! We support each other in everything we do and I can't wait to see what our future holds for us!!  Amanda

Seven and a half years ago I met Mark, my soon to be husband.  This year he asked me to share the rest of my life with him and his son.  We are now in the wedding planning process and are excited for our big day coming up in May!  I love you!  Melissa

My husband and I are high school sweethearts. He proposed to me by surprising me after work with a note on the door telling me to get on the four wheeler and follow the flags. The flags lead me up to the pond on the hill behind our house that over looks his family's farm. He made a big sign that said "will you marry me" and of course I said yes! We got married September 28,2013. We are now expecting our first child in April.   Bryanna

After morning milking we spent the day bailing and stacking hay. We finished the day up with milking again. When finally home that night and she had finished making supper I took her hand and escorted her to the living room and had her sit in the chair. I got on one knee and proposed. Of course she cried and said yes. Not how I planned to propose but she almost found the ring in my truck. It was a great ending to a long exhausting workday. Been married 10 years and have endured many adventures with more to come.  Chris

My husband and I met on the internet. I had told a friend of mine that I was thinking of putting my profile on an online dating site and they encouraged me to do it. Dan saw my profile. After communicating online for a while, we decided to meet and go out for dinner. I knew some people that knew him so I had already "checked him out!" He picked me up at my house. To this day he says he knew I was nervous because my knees were bouncing and it wasn't to the beat of the music on my stereo! We were married 4 years later and this June we will celebrate our 9th anniversary. I thank God every day for bringing Dan into my life. He is the best thing that has ever happened to me and is the love of my life!   Diane

My girlfriend (at the time) had moved in with me and had been commuting from Guttenberg to Cedar Rapids for a half of a year.  She had been employed in Cedar Rapids for nearly 10 years.  She finally placed her 2 week notice.  The Sunday prior to her final week of work, i placed an order for 4 consecutive days of flower delivery-all from a non-named person.  The Friday morning prior to her last day, i woke up at 4am with her, asked her if she thought she would receive any flowers, she smiled, and replied I hope so.  I told her she wouldn't.  She asked how I knew, I told her because I didn't order any.  She looked sad, I then said, but I got you something better...I got on one knee, opened the box, she cried, said yes, and the rest is history...we were married on August 23, 2014 at Pike's Peak in McGregor, Iowa.   Steve

Tyler and I met at a wedding. I had set my best friend up with her husband and they wanted to return the favor. They said he was the sweetest guy and that he would make me laugh. I had heard of him before since we were from a small town but since I went to a different school, we had never met. We danced all night and had a great time, but he really didn't seem like my type. The next morning I woke up to the sweetest message from him and decided to give it a try. He says it was all because of his awesome dance moves! 2 years later, he is the love of my life and true soulmate. I never knew this kind of love could exist and I'm so thankful that I took a chance. He makes me laugh everyday and brings out the best in me. I'm so glad my friend didn't give up. Maybe some day we can return the favor at our wedding!   Emily

I had spent the night at a friend's house and got back home the next afternoon to find Jim gone. Hours later, he came home with his dad & brother and ran straight to the bathroom. After an hour or so I went to the bathroom where we had a 5 gallon fish tank.  I noticed a bobber in it and I watched something spin below it as a fish swam past, only to realize it was a ring! I grabbed it & ran back to my now husband. His only question?  So, is that a yes?   Katie

My proposal: while u was in the shower my husband put the ring box in my jeans pocket. When I got out of the shower he proposed I said yes of course:) then he had planned to go to a party with family and friends so that we could celebrate with everyone:)  Amber

My husband was the beer guy who delivered to Sawmill and I was the bartender whom enjoyed his company;).   Amanda

It was December and I talked Alicia into see the Rotary light display in La Crosse. As we walked up to the entrance there was a line for horse drawn carriage rides. I suggested we take one to which she said "I don't want to wait" pointing at the long line. I said"I think it'll be ok" ushering her to the front of the line which I had previously arranged. They greeted us by name and my wife was quite surprised and possibly suspicious. We took a ride around the lights and when the time was right the carriage stopped and I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. I always tell her I needed the perfect setting to match the perfect girl.   Curtis

Saturday was a beautiful day for a  nice drive to Waukon.  Like many others we were just going to "look" at Elliots.  To my surprise there was an excellent sale taking place that was ending in 20 minutes.  I am sure that Greg will forever be convinced that I knew about the sale.  I saw a ring that I really liked.  Because of my job I wanted something that could handle being bumped around.  When I kept asking him what he liked or what he wanted to do all he would say is get what you want you are the one that has to wear it.  We decided on a ring and left it there for sizing.
I had no idea when he would give me the ring but knew that it would be sized on Monday and Tuesday was my birthday. Monday night as I was nodding off to sleep he told me he had a video clip that he wanted me to watch.  It was from Step Brothers and was about a man asking a woman to marry him.  It was probably one of the most thought out and heart felt proposals that I have ever seen.  After we watched it he got my ring out, put it on my finger and asked me to marry him.  No wedding date is set just yet.  Greg is one of a kind.  To have such an awesome best friend and husband to be is truly a gift to be treasured.  Lori

I had just graduated college and my now wife and I were thinking about throwing a party for me inviting family and close friends. I had her run the show as she believed it to be my grad party. she invited close friends and family from both our sides. We fried fish for everyone and had a family member set up dj equipment I told her I was going to write a little thank you for everyone coming and had her come up to make sure everyone knew she planned it. Everyone including Lindsay was really surprised when I got down on one knee and asked the love of my life of 7 years and highschool sweetheart to marry me! Of course she said yes:) everyone was excited and loved the Surprise and of course the fish!   Derek

The proposal was a complete surprise. While vacationing in the Black Hills in late summer of 2009. One warm day out on the trail while on horse back with my folks. We stopped for a photo opportunity on top of a bute over looking a meadow. At that moment he pulled the ring from his pocket got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said "YES" we were married that spring and life just keeps getting more rewarding as the years go on. Couldn't ask for a better partner in life's journey!  Jessica

We were at a truck pull (our favorite summer activity) when he proposed. I was at the end taping my family go down the track when Chad came and pulled me to the middle in front of all of the spectators & got down on one knee.  One of the officials came and poured water on us. Thankfully I could  blame the water on my face on that and not happy tears. It was absolutely perfect for a couple like us.  Isabella

My husband and I met 10 years ago, I was outside my house getting ready to leave and 2 houses down there was this guy pruning trees in his front yard. I had recently moved in and he happened to yell at me and asked if I wanted to help him, I had just went through a break up and wanted nothing to do with guys for a while..... well shortly after that day we started hanging out , 1 day we were at the mall and started walking by the jewelry store we decided to go in and " just look" , we came out engaged, shortly after that we were married. I cant imagine where I would be without him.  Angie

I was a waitress in a small Wis town. , and one evening He came in with 2 of his friends. One of the other guys asked me for my phone number and said he'd call me, but a couple days later Dave called me and asked me out--saying that I didn't want to go out with the guy that asked for my phone number. So I went out with Dave and 2 weeks later I proposed to him and 6 weeks later we got married and have been together 45 years. Linda

Kurt and I first met at high school job when I was 15 and he was 16 we have been together ever since. This past November was our 5 year anniversary. Kurt proposed to me with the help of our little dog Emmett he proposed with a note on emmetts collar saying mamma will you marry my daddy . Our wedding is set for October 1st 2016, which will be my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary.   Shantel

Peter and I met 13 years ago. We dated for a few months, and then I went to college so we parted ways. After college, I moved away for six years. Random texts kept us in contact. However throughout the years we seemed to meet up at Country on the River, which made the random texts, become more frequent.  After moving back in 2012, Country on the River came again, and I believe that is when we truly fell in love.  In 2014 Peter and I got married on Country on the River weekend and we couldn't be happier!   Lindsey

I went to the shed to see Kurt. I was talking to him about my day and he interrupted me. He wanted me to grab the 18mm wrench. He was specific about having me check the end of the wrench. I went over to the tool box and saw that he had tied a ring to it. I went to give the wrench to him and he asked me to marry him. I replied, can I say maybe.  His expression was quite priceless and he was jokingly mad. He said I need a yes or no. I told him yes.   Kelli

We were staying at a casino resort in Greenbay. I talked the  Casino's head of security into allowing me to propose in the casino with their help.
Patience was on a slot machine when she was approached by a security officer & asked if she knew a man named Robert. She agreed. The officer informed her there was an issue and I was being detained. The officer told Patience to follow her.
She led her to me, I was on one knee with the Kay's box opened next to a gorgeous waterfall. We'll be married 5 years in October.   Robert

A friend of mine gave me my current wife's phone number and had me meet her while she was working at a gas station. We started dating February 20, 2009. I proposed to her on her birthday, September 17,2009 at Milty's in Lansing, she had no idea that I had bought a engagement ring. When we arrived at Milty's I told her that I had to use to the restroom when I actually went out to the vehicle  to get the ring, I asked the waitress to put the ring in the box on her plate when they brought our food. When they brought our food out and set it down in front of her, I grabbed it and asked her to marry me. She said yes and we were married May, 22, 2010  Mike

We met by working at the same establishment and hated each other. Soon we got stuck working the same shift and grew to become friends, telling stories we'd never tell our parents. Later we started hanging out at friends places and became best friends. I went off to college but he continued to call me racking up a huge phone bills for his parents. When I came back he finally asked me out on a date. We've now been married for 10 years and have 4 beautiful children. He is gods gift to me and my rock! Love you sweetie!  Kallie
