2019 Effigy Mounds National Monument Winter Film Festival: Exploring America’s Best Idea

Writer and historian Wallace Stegner called national parks “the best idea we ever had.  Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst.”  Across our nation in every state are designated national parks, monuments, historic sites, national battlefields, seashores, trails, rivers, and recreation areas.  Each represents an aspect of the American story; the people, the places and landscapes that inspire us, our greatest triumphs as a nation as well as our greatest heartaches and shames.  This winter the Effigy Mounds National Monument Winter Film Festival will present a video tour of “America’s Best Idea”, showing films from National Park Service sites across the nation.

Beginning February 1, 2019 the Winter Film Festival will run every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday for 7 weeks.  Each week we will highlight a specific aspect of the National Park Service’s mission to preserve these special places, our history and story.  There will be two showings a day, one in the morning from 10:00am – 11:30am and one in the afternoon from 1:00pm – 3:30pm.
